We’re pleased to announce the Call for Papers on The social dimensions of the pandemic of Covid-19 in the Latin American context for Revista del CESLA. International Latin American Studies Review, no. 29, June 2022, coordinated by Dr. Marcia Grisotti (Federal University of Santa Catarina, Brazil), Dr. Daniel Granada (Federal University of Santa Catarina, Brazil) and Dr. Mariana Leoni Birriel (University of the Republic, Uruguay).
Pandemics have occurred throughout history and have caused profound disruptions in the social system. In 2020, when faced with the emergence of Covid-19, several countries encouraged the creation of protocols, international cooperation networks, mitigation and prevention measures. The implementation of these devices highlighted several social problems that existed before the pandemic. Isolation (or resistance to it) is a practice with multiple variants, depending on who and where it is isolated and its implementation as a public health strategy highlights a series of challenges and social consequences, which permeate since the individual experience of the pandemic , with restrictions on contact and circulation, even relations between nations with border closings.
The health crisis caused by the spread of Covid-19 has shown a series of problems arising from trade and the rapid circulation of goods, people, animals and microorganisms. Such problems have profoundly impacted, albeit in a differentiated way, the global, regional and local spheres of pandemic management, especially in relation to the global health governance guidelines established by the World Health Organization (WHO) and their effective application in all these spheres management (Grisotti, 2016; 2020).
The study of the emergence of the pandemic and its spread, related to the social inequalities, health inequities, demonstrate how social issues are closely associated with the consequences of the pandemic. Therefore, historical and socio-anthropological studies are fundamental to understand these networks of interdependencies. The weight of social inequalities and the existence of many vulnerable groups become evident when adopting contingency measures to control epidemics. Health professionals were also impacted in such a way that it becomes relevant to reflect on how academic training prepares them to work in contexts of uncertainty.
