The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (2005) defines Ecosystem Services as the benefits people obtain from ecosystems. These services, which include supporting, provisioning, regulating, and cultural services, are fundamental for human wellbeing. These services can be provided by entire ecosystems as by individual communities, but they are not always well identified and quantified. In many cases, ecosystem services are under threat due to the multiple impacts communities and ecosystems undergo.
To advance our knowledge in this topic, we are organizing a special issue in Hydrobiologia addressing the services provided by aquatic communities and ecosystems. We especially invite contributions on case studies. Reviews are contributed by invitation only.
We welcome manuscripts on any aquatic community or ecosystem, including inland water and marine ecosystems. Manuscripts addressing the impacts of invasive species on services provided by aquatic communities or ecosystems, or addressing costs associated with ecosystem services are welcome. Contributions from so far less studied regions, such as Africa, Asia and South America are particularly welcome.
Guest Editors for this special issue are: Verónica Ferreira (University of Coimbra, Portugal), Luis Mauricio Bini (Federal University of Goias, Brasil), Katya Kovalenko (U.S. Geological Survey, USA), André Padial (Federal University of Parana, Brasil), Judit Padisák (University of Pannonia, Hungary), María de los Ángeles González Sagrario (Instituto de Investigaciones Marinas y Costeras, Argentina)
