We’re pleased to announce the Call for Papers for the thematic dossier of Revista del CESLA. International Latin American Studies Review, no. 30, 2022: Killing the other: ethnicide, epistemicide and linguicide in the historical and cultural formation of Latin America, coordinated by Francisco Vanderlei Ferreira da Costa (Federal Institute of Bahia) and Alcione Nawroski (University of Warsaw).
Who knows, writes. In the academic world, knowledge is legitimized by writing. In the human and social sciences as well. When reflecting on the sciences produced in the Americas, it is possible to conclude that they are largely legitimated by the languages of the colonizers. We seldom ask why this happens. This questioning will show that colonization is present in the various spaces of Latin American societies. Thus, the dossier proposed here aims to hold a dialogue on coloniality of decoloniality, based on the epistemologies of the South coined by Boaventura dos Santos, Gayatri Spivak Frantz Fanon, Anibal Quijano, Enrique Dussel, among others, and worked by Lélia Gonzales, Sueli Carneiro, Lynn Mário Trindade and Marcos Bagno.
From Latin word cide, the dossier deals with the "killing" of ethnicity, knowledge/knowledge and languages in the Americas, initiated in 1492. The extermination of knowledge, language and culture by the colonizers reverberated in an act of subservience, dependence and finally colonization of the other. From the native peoples to the Afrodescendant populations, (in the case of Brazil, today 54% of the population is black), passing through different European and Asian groups, we passed through a monolingual school thought in the language of the colonizer. Thus, telling the stories of the Americas in the language of the colonizer puts all other ways of thinking, expressing, narrating on the margins. In this sense, language with its modalities starts to act in a space of epistemicide, when the sense of cultures of Western domination kills traditional epistemologies. Similar experiences have occurred not only in Brazil, but also in other Latin American countries, whose issues will also be covered in this dossier.
In Brazil, since the first education project, the education of native peoples has been tutored by the colonizers and captained by white educators. It perpetuated the Portuguese language as a national project of expansion created by the coloniality, while the languages of the indigenous peoples were not considered languages, but dialects. The consequence of this linguistic policy in Latin America can be seen in the fact that more than 500 native languages that have survived European conquests are at risk of extinction due to economic pressure, exodus from their territories and lack of public support. In this sense, the experiences of revitalization undertaken by peoples and traditional communities rekindle some hopes.
This dossier will welcome contributions that seek to address the historical, social, cultural, sociolinguistic and educational dimensions in Latin American societies, understanding the extermination of the other as a project of coloniality. In addition, it intends to reflect on strategies for revitalizing the knowledge, cultures and languages of minority peoples that in a broader dimension, from the perspective of diversity, make up the majority of Latin America.
