Due to the extreme weather, natural hazards, such as extreme rainfalls, floods, large-scale landslides, etcetera, happen more and more frequently over the world. Heavy rainfalls tend to bring down plenty of loose soils and rocks accumulated on the upper catchment. Large amounts of debris and driftwoods are washed into rivers, leading to various compound disasters, such as riverbed scouring, bridges broken, riverbank damages, and so on. These disasters have not only endangered the safety of human lives but brought the tremendous loss of economic activities. Therefore, the assessment of the impact in hydrological regimes due to extreme events on in-river structures, irrespective of engineering or non-engineering measures, is important. However, river flow is highly dynamic and the flood-induced scouring process is extremely complicated. This, in turn, causes consequent scouring and damages to happen to in-river structures in the flooding period due to riverbed disturbed. Therefore, advancing a better understanding of the occurrence of riverbed scouring is essential. In recent years, there are great improvements in computational facilities, so using numerical models to conduct high-resolution simulations becomes more feasible. Besides, novel in-situ monitoring technologies, e.g. accelerators monitoring, internet of things (IoT), unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), particle image velocimetry (PIV), acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP), and float out devices, are readily applied to river problems. It would be more beneficial if such monitoring technologies and numerical approaches can be integrated with the flood management strategy to provide an across-the-board assessment of the safety of in-river structures, and further quantify its social impacts. In this regard, we welcome any topics related to a combination of the in-situ monitoring technologies, advanced numerical simulations, and flood control in the framework of watershed disasters in this special issue.
