Water and the subsurface environment contamination by hazardous pollutants such as petroleum hydrocarbons, chlorinated organics, and heavy metals has become a serious problem worldwide. Since the pollutants cause the potential threat to the environment and human health, the contamination needs to be treated to restore the quality of the environment. The persistence and the toxicity of hazardous substances present usually creates the difficulty in remediation and the increase in remedial costs. Therefore, more efficient and cost-effective technologies are required to deal with these remediation problems. In this special issue, researchers who specialize in chemical/physical and biological technologies are welcome to share their expertise to restore water and subsurface environmental quality. This special issue cordially solicits papers in, but not limited to, the following areas of the latest scientific findings, effective approaches, and state-of-the-art strategies on water and wastewater treatment, and remediation of contaminated water, groundwater, soils, and sediments:
• Chemical and biological technologies for water and wastewater treatment;
• Chemical and biological technologies for soil, sediment, and groundwater remediation;
• Integrated technologies to combat surface water and subsurface pollution;
• Health and risk assessment for the developed technologies;
• Emergent contaminant removal;
• Other hazardous pollutant removal technologies and related issues; and
• Case studies or review articles
