The fifth generation (5G) and beyond 5G (B5G) of mobile communication networks are emerging as revolutionary technologies supporting very-high speed, ultra-reliable and low latency wireless connectivity for human-oriented and machine-type communications. The core technical requirements for these new networks include a boast in user mobility for ground-based vehicular connectivity, a peak data rate and an area-traffic capacity which are twenty and ten times higher, respectively, than modern fourth generation (4G) network, as well as a latency at the radio interface that is ten times smaller. These ambitious requirements are intended to enable a variety of novel applications, spanning intelligent transportation, smart industry and smart home, healthcare and interactive communications through virtual and augment reality. The commercial deployment of 5G started last year in the USA and in several Asian and European countries, whereas in the Latin America Uruguay was the first country to introduce a commercial 5G network. While the rollout of 5G is dissipating the uncertainty about the viability of this new technology, further research is needed to realize the 5G vision and to pave the road for subsequent generations of ubiquitous and truly intelligent mobile communications networks. In the Latin American context. It is essential to conduct basic and applied research activities to adopt these new technologies for solving the social, economic and environmental problems. The implications of regulatory politics and spectrum auctions have to be fully investigated in the Latin America context for the success of this 5G transformation.
This special issue of IEEE Latin America Transactions provides a forum for the identification of problems and research trends and the discussion of hot topics in 5G and B5G mobile communication networks as well asthe impact of these emerging networks in Latin America. Prospective authors in the areas of communication networks, wireless communications, instrumentation, electronics, control and automation, optimization, computer science and signal processing are invited to submit original and high-quality papers dealing with, but not limited to, the following research topics: Multiple access techniques for very high-speed communications.
