Dossiê Temático: COVID-19 Pandemic and Aviation: The Medium- and Long-term Impacts

The COVID-19 pandemic is considered as the biggest social and economic shock since the Great Depression. The aviation sector was almost immediately forced into flights cancellation due to demand melt downs, and the financial situation of airlines, aircraft manufactories, airports, travel intermediaries and other participants in the industry supply chain has been severely deteriorated. Governments around the world are concerned about how this industry can go through this turmoil time, and implement (or are planning) huge taxpayer-funded bailouts.

Apart from the near term and direct impacts, the pandemic may cause some long-term, structural shifts that change the course of the aviation industry and, more generally, how we travel and conduct business. It is therefore important to identify these impacts (and their determinants) ahead of time, so that we could mitigate the bad impacts while promoting/adapting to the good ones.

Being Complementary to the previous JATM SI which focuses on the short-term impact and timely insights of COVID-19 on aviation, this special issue seeks to gather high-quality research to understand the medium- and long-term impacts of COVID-19 pandemic – direct, and indirect effects– and the implications for policy and management. We welcome original research, especially based on airline industry and economic data, on (but not limited to) the following topics:

Impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on medium and long-term air travel demand;
Impacts on air cargo demand and operations;
Impacts on air passengers’ travel behavior including general aviation;
Impacts on effective airline management;
Impacts on airlines’ financial performance;
Impacts on airport operations and business strategies;
Long-term impacts on the environment and sustainability;
Sustainability and resilience of air transportation systems;
Policy responses to the above impacts;
Fair share of the total government subsidies to transportation that the aviation sector should receive.

This special issue is open to all the scholars doing the related research. To facilitate the development of the special issue, a workshop is to be hosted by the University of International Business and Economics (UIBE) in Beijing in November 2020 (physically or virtually, depending on the global pandemic development). Note that this special issue is open to all scholars, regardless of their participation in the workshop or not.
