The advent of the global water crisis with a shortage of freshwater and contamination of the groundwater has gradually requirement of wastewater treatment and reuse processes. This creates the requirement of an effective paradigm to prevent further damage to the ecosystem and to effectively recycle wastewater to meet water scarcity. The used water from households, industries, etc. referred to as the wastewater is hazardous to health and environment depending upon the parameters and pH values. Continuous discharge of wastewater or sewage water also constitutes water pollution, which can be considered as a threat to the human population and the ecosystem. Developed countries and communities follow high wastewater treatment standards, whereas the underdeveloped countries and communities suffer from severe problems. Recycled water can be effectively used for various purposes such as agriculture, industrial cooling, household activities, firefighting, etc.
A well-established area can have a centralized wastewater collection system in a structured manner with lesser manpower requirements. However, a decentralized system is useful across on-site systems. Normal wastewater treatment processes include physical, biological, chemical and slug water treatment. Collecting and treating the wastewater by separating, removing, setting, and filtering, rags, debris, micro-organisms, etc. is a challenging process that requires efficient strategic plans, dynamic models, and control techniques. Model predictive control (MPC), Fuzzy Control (FC), Non-destructive Procedures, Advanced Oxidation Processes, Photocatalyticand Membrane Reactor (PMR) are some of the control processes used across present-day applications. Besides, human lives are greatly dependent on adequate water supply with good quality. However, with a growing population, pollution, urbanization, and industrial expansions there is an increased requirement for sewage management and wastewater treatment processes. Achieving sustainable development in sewage treatment is a highly challenging process, require sustainable planning and appropriate strategic measures. With an intent to bring sustainable strategic measures for wastewater treatment and management processes, this special issue provides an excellent platform for the researchers to present a novel solution on wastewater management processes.
